Fun Things to Know about the French

French Beer Vocabulary

In French, we use a lot of English words to describe beer… So we listed here some of the words that can be different.

1. La bière – beer
2. Une bière – a beer, either by the glass or the bottle
3. Le verre – a glass
4. La bouteille – a bottle
5. Une canette – a beer can
6. Une chope the bière – a beer mug
7. Une bière pression – on tap beer
8. Une pinte – a pint – note the French pronunciation: p-in nasal-t.
9. Un demi – half pint
10. Une bière brune – a stout
11. Une bière blonde – a lager
12. Une bière blanche – white beer, wheat/belgium style beer
13. Une bière ambrée (we also say “rousse”) – reddish in color, it has different English translation: Amber beer, red beer (but it’s not necessarily fruity)
14. Une bière anglaise – an ale
15. Une triple – golden, spicy, higher alcohol content
16. Une gueuze – no idea how to describe that, you’ll have to try it for yourself! It’s a light but spicy beer, with a complex taste. The most famous one is called “mort subite” (sudden death)
17. Un panaché – a shandy – a mix of beer and carbonated lemonade… It’s a very common drink in France! Add some red fruit sirop and you’ll get “un Monaco”!

19. Un parfum – flavor/smell/a taste (based on context)
20. Une épice – a spice
21. Un fruit – fruit
22. Fruité – fruity
23. Une couleur – color
24. Une touche de – a touch of
25. Un goût – a taste
26. Cette bière a un goût de… – this beer tastes like…
27. La mousse – foam
28. Les bulles (f) – bubbles
29. Le houblon – Hops
30. Le blé – wheat
31. Le froment – common wheat, cake wheat
32. La brasserie – Brewery
33. Un brasseur – a brewer
